大浴場へ向かうひとときに、
自然と手仕事が溶け合う紙の造形
高山荘 華野の二階、大浴場入口の正面に飾られているのは、紙のオブジェです。
バナナの葉の繊維を用い、和紙の技法にならって丁寧にすき上げられたこの作品は、インドネシア・バリ島ウブドを拠点に活動する 成瀬 潔 (なるせ きよし) 氏によるもの。
自然素材の持つ力強さと繊細さをそのまま紙へと昇華させた作品は、素材そのものが語りかけるような力を湛えています。
成瀬氏は「バナナペーパー」制作の第一人者として知られ、近年では口コミのみで世界中の建築家やデザイナーから依頼が舞い込む存在です。
その紙は単なるインテリア素材に留まらず、空間と呼応するコンテンポラリーアートとしても高く評価されています。
この作品は、バリ文化やプリミティブアートに深い造詣を持つ 稲葉 京 (いなば たかし) 氏のギャラリーで館主が出会い、即座に迎え入れを決めた一作です。
正方形の画面は左右で異なる繊維の表情を持ち、わずかな差異が豊かな奥行きを生み出しています。
大浴場へ向かう動線は、男女それぞれ左右へと分かれていきます。
その分岐点にこの作品を据えることで、空間に自然な均衡が生まれ、湯へと向かう心と身体を静かに整えてくれることでしょう。
On the way to the baths,
a sculptural form of paper where nature and craftsmanship quietly converge.
Displayed directly in front of the entrance to the communal baths on the second floor of Takayamaso Hanano is a sculptural paper object of quiet presence.
Made from fibers of banana leaves and carefully hand-formed using techniques inspired by traditional Japanese papermaking, this work was created by Kiyoshi Naruse, who is based in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia.
By transforming the inherent strength and delicacy of natural materials into paper, the work carries a presence that seems to speak through the material itself.
Naruse is widely regarded as a leading figure in banana paper making. In recent years, his work has attracted commissions from architects and designers around the world solely through word of mouth.
His paper is valued not merely as an interior material, but as contemporary art that resonates deeply with the surrounding space.
The inn’s proprietor encountered this piece at the gallery of Takashi Inaba, a connoisseur deeply versed in Balinese culture and primitive art, and decided immediately to bring it into Hanano.
Within its square format, the surface reveals subtle differences in fiber texture from left to right, creating depth through quiet variation.
The path leading to the baths divides to the left and right for men and women.
By placing this work at that point of transition, a natural balance is established, gently preparing both body and mind for the restorative experience of the baths.
