高山荘 華野のレストランへと続く廊下に、ひときわ存在感を放つ作品があります。
それは、アフリカの酋長が代々使用してきた鉄製の杖を、花器へと再構築したもの。酋長の象徴として権威を示す杖の先端に、水を受ける小さな器を仕込み、一本の花を活ける…。
そんな大胆かつ繊細な発想によって誕生したアート作品です。
杖には、トカゲのような爬虫類をモチーフとした装飾が施されており、生命力と再生を象徴するアフリカらしい造形が際立ちます。素材は鉄。時を経たその質感が放つ鈍い光沢は、まるで大地の鼓動を宿すようです。
この作品は、骨董商であり美術評論家としても知られる坂田和實（さかた・かずみ）氏が運営する「古道具坂田」で展示されていたもの。館主の華道の師匠がその美しさに惚れ込み、後に館主が譲り受けて展示することになりました。
華野の館主は「この造形にはコンテンポラリーアートの本質がある」と語ります。形式や国境を越えた美の対話、それが、華野が大切にする“花とアートの宿”の哲学です。
料亭「遊山」で展示されている吹き矢を加工した花器と同様、プリミティブな造形が一輪の花によって完成する。そんな静謐な緊張感と優美さが、この作品にも宿っています。

Power and Stillness — The African Staff Turned Flower Vessel
Along the corridor leading to the restaurant of Takayamaso Hanano, there stands a piece that commands quiet attention.
It is a work of art in which an iron staff once used by generations of African chiefs has been transformed into a flower vessel.
At the tip of the staff—once a symbol of authority—a small basin has been embedded to hold water, allowing a single flower to bloom.
From this bold yet delicate reinterpretation was born a strikingly original artwork.
The staff itself is adorned with motifs resembling reptiles, such as lizards—symbols of vitality and regeneration in African culture.
Forged from iron, the surface carries a subdued sheen born of time and use, emanating an earthy resonance, as if the heartbeat of the land still lingers within.
This piece was once exhibited at Kobutsudo Sakata, the renowned gallery curated by Kazumi Sakata, a celebrated antique dealer and art critic.
It was admired by the Hanano proprietor’s flower master, who later encouraged the innkeeper to acquire and display it within Hanano.
“The essence of contemporary art lies in this form,” says the owner of Hanano.
A dialogue of beauty that transcends form, culture, and geography—this is the philosophy that defines Hanano as an “Inn of Flowers and Art.”
Like the blowgun-turned-flower-vessel displayed in the restaurant Yuzan, this work finds completion in the presence of a single bloom—balancing primitive energy with serene grace.
Guests who pass through this corridor experience a rare intersection of African strength and Japanese delicacy,
a moment where two cultures meet in silent harmony.
