高山荘 華野の料亭「遊山」の個室を訪れると、壁に掛けられた一幅の武者絵が目に留まります。江戸時代中期に描かれたこの作品は、勇壮な武者の姿や当時の人々の暮らしを鮮やかに描いたもので、抽象表現ではなくはっきりとした彩色が特徴です。日本の伝統文化を直に感じさせる力強さを持ちながらも、どこか温かみのある表現が見る人を惹き込みます。

この作品は、館主が師事する華道家から譲り受けたもの。「日本の旅館なのだから、日本のエッセンスも大切にしなさい」という師の教えを受け、華野の空間に迎え入れられました。ただし、そのままの掛け軸では純和風に偏りすぎると考えた館主は、自らの審美眼で額装に加工。選んだのは、渋みのあるアンティークのゴールドフレーム。古典と現代をつなぐ絶妙な装いが、和風モダンを標榜する華野の空間に見事に調和しています。

館主は「モダンアートばかりでは飽きが来る。日本の伝統も同時に生かしてこそ、真の和モダンが成立する」と語ります。古き良き日本文化と現代的な美意識の融合こそが、華野が目指す“おもてなしの美”。武者絵はその象徴ともいえる存在です。

In the private dining rooms of Takayamaso Hanano’s restaurant Yuzan, a striking samurai painting adorns the wall. Created in the mid-Edo period, the work vividly depicts a valiant warrior and scenes of daily life from that era. The piece was passed down from the innkeeper’s flower master, who advised, “Since this is a Japanese inn, cherish the essence of Japan.” Taking this to heart, the proprietor welcomed the artwork into Hanano—but instead of displaying it as a hanging scroll, he reframed it within an antique gold frame of subdued luster. This thoughtful presentation bridges classical and contemporary aesthetics, harmonizing perfectly with Hanano’s refined wa-modern style.
